Ultimate Shelving Solution

The Unparalleled Perfection of the Vitsœ 606 Shelving System

Hi y’all 👋

Happy new year and welcome back to the Midmod Corner.

It's been a minute. But let me explain. I'm now a proud and happy dad!

I took the first-ever four-week break from the newsletter to spend some time with my newborn baby girl, embrace this new chapter, and… well, not write! Which, of course, means several things happened in that window, so I’ll punish myself by never taking PTO again… kidding… probably.

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

In today’s email:

📰 The Story

The Ultimate Shelving Solution

Good design endures. Case in point today: Vitsœ's 606 Universal Shelving System.

I'll admit, I became a bit of a fanatic about this modular shelving system, but it's hard not to be when a company just nails it.

I originally discovered the 606 system while delving into the works of Dieter Rams. I suppose all of his creations—given that the guy had literally influenced the 20th-century aesthetics and culture—left me somewhat stunned, and I kinda blew right by the Vitsœ unit.

But as I was revisiting my old Instagram posts recently, there it was again – the Vitsœ. Isn't it striking? The way it looks like a blank canvas which almost disappears when covered with your life.

If you were to own just one set of shelves for the rest of your life…

You’d probably be looking for something sturdy and well-built, easy to dismantle and reinstall in different spaces.

Straightforward to repair or replace if any damage occurs.

Obviously, something that looks good—but in a low-key way. After all, it's your books and decor that that should steal the spotlight, not the shelves.

Also, a piece that is neutral enough to adapt to changes in color scheme or architectural style

In simpler terms, the shelves should seamlessly coexist with your life while doing what shelves do best.

And believe it or not, the 28-year-old Dieter Rams managed to effortlessly squeeze all these specifications into the design of the 606 Universal Shelving back in 1959.

Extraordinary in its ordinariness

For more than half a century, The 606 system remains Vitsœ’s flagship product; simple, timeless and well thought through, right down to the last detail.

And when I say the last detail, I mean it. From service, product, design consulting, through to delivery and installation. Everything is cleverly planned.

Take the order process. Vitsœ will ask you to send photos of your rooms and collections—whether it's decor, books, vinyls, or whatever you plan to display. They have a system that allow them to match the design to your space – and budget.

Then, they will box up the sections – like Lego – and send them to you with a spirit level, pencil and the correct masonry drill part.

Starting to sound like some kind of Ikea furniture, isn't it? Except that Ikea was only founded in 1983, more than 20 years later!

And I wouldn't be surprised if the Vitsœ system was the inspiration behind their Elvarli storage system.

Plus, the 606 shelving system is actually built like a tank. Move it, groove it, take it on a world tour—it's built to outlast even your most indecisive decor phases.

You can even pass it on as a family heirloom as in the case of this family who carried their 606 shelving system through eight different properties over 30 years.

While the 606 system comes with a notable price tag, it is economical if you buy into the idea of “living better with less that lasts longer”, according to Rams’ own principles of good design.

It’s not sexy or loud but it is reliable and restful on the eye. It’s furniture for grown-ups and to grow old with in a contented, long-lasting marriage between user and object.
